These Terms and Conditions ("Terms") govern your use of the Desi Dictionary mobile application (the "App"), operated by The Desi Dictionary Ltd ("we", "us", or "our"). By downloading, accessing, or using the App, you agree to be bound by these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.

2. Description of the App

Desi Dictionary is a language learning app designed for diaspora families, heritage language reclaimers, and newcomers connecting with South Asian languages. It uses English transliteration to remove the script barrier and includes structured lessons, vocabulary content, and Morni — our AI-powered language tutor.

3. Eligibility and account

To use the App, you must be aged 13 or over. By creating an account, you confirm that you meet this requirement. If we become aware that a user is under 13, we will close the account and delete their data.

You can sign in using your email address, Apple ID (Sign in with Apple), or Google account (Sign in with Google). You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for all activity under your account. If you think your account has been compromised, contact us at hello@thedesidictionary.com straight away.

4. Subscriptions, billing, and auto-renewal

The App offers a free tier with limited features and paid subscription plans that unlock additional content and functionality. Details of available plans, including pricing and duration, are shown clearly in the App and in the App Store or Google Play.

All payments are processed by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play) — not by us directly. We use RevenueCat to manage your subscription status and determine which features you can access. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period unless you cancel at least 24 hours beforehand. You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time in your Apple ID account settings or Google account settings. We cannot cancel subscriptions on your behalf.

If you reinstall the App or switch devices, you can restore your existing subscription using the Restore Purchases option in the App, which syncs your entitlements from Apple or Google via RevenueCat.

Important: Deleting your account does not cancel your App Store or Google Play subscription. You must cancel it separately through Apple or Google, otherwise you may continue to be charged.

5. Free trials and price changes

We may offer free trials from time to time. Where a trial is available, the length and the price that applies afterwards will be shown clearly before you subscribe. Unless you cancel before the trial ends, billing will start at the rate shown.

We may change subscription prices in future. If we do, you will be notified in advance and will have the opportunity to cancel before new pricing takes effect.

6. Cancellations and refunds

You can cancel your subscription at any time through your Apple or Google account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period and you keep access until then. Refunds are governed by Apple or Google's own policies — we are not able to issue them directly.

7. Communications

We may send you transactional emails such as password resets and subscription confirmations. These are necessary for your account and cannot be opted out of while your account is active. If you opt in, we may also send you marketing emails and newsletters — you can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email or by contacting us at hello@thedesidictionary.com. The App may also send you practice reminders and re-engagement notifications; you can manage or disable these at any time in your device settings.

8. Acceptable use

You agree to use the App only for lawful purposes and in a way that does not infringe the rights of others. In particular, you agree that you will not:

• Reverse engineer, decompile, or otherwise attempt to extract source code from the App
• Bypass or interfere with any security or access-control features
• Use the App to harass, abuse, or harm any person, or to share illegal or infringing content
• Misuse Morni for purposes outside of language learning
• Use automated tools or scripts to access the App in a way that could damage or overload our infrastructure
• Impersonate any person or entity

9. Morni (AI tutor)

Morni is an AI-powered language tutor built into the App, powered by Google Gemini. You can interact with Morni via text or voice. Responses are AI-generated and may not always be accurate — do not rely on Morni for anything beyond language learning guidance.

When you send a message to Morni, your input and limited conversation context are sent securely to our backend (Supabase Edge Functions), which forwards the request to Google's Gemini API to generate a reply. Your conversations are not stored on our servers — they are kept locally on your device for continuity. Our backend records only daily usage metrics to manage fair use and subscription limits. Voice input is captured via your device microphone and processed to generate a response; we do not retain audio recordings.

We may suspend access to Morni for any user who misuses it.

10. Intellectual property

Desi Dictionary, including all vocabulary content, transliterations, audio, illustrations, and the Morni AI system, is owned by or licensed to The Desi Dictionary Ltd and is protected by copyright and other applicable laws. You receive a limited, personal, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the App for your own non-commercial purposes, subject to these Terms.

You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, or create derivative works based on the App or its content without our prior written consent. The Desi Dictionary name, logo, and brand assets are trademarks of The Desi Dictionary Ltd.

11. User content

"User Content" means any text, images, audio, or other material input, uploaded, or otherwise submitted by you through the App. You retain ownership of your User Content. By using the App, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to host, store, process, and use your User Content solely for the purpose of operating, improving, and providing the App and its features.

12. Account deletion and data

You can delete your account at any time from within the App. Deleting your account will remove your profile and learning data from our systems, as described in our Privacy Policy.

Important: Deleting your account does not cancel your App Store or Google Play subscription. You must manage or cancel it separately through Apple or Google.

13. Disclaimers and limitation of liability

The App is provided "as is" and "as available." We make reasonable efforts to keep it running but do not guarantee it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or available on all devices at all times. Language learning outcomes are not guaranteed.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, The Desi Dictionary Ltd will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential loss arising from your use of the App. Our total liability to you will not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the relevant claim.

Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any other liability which cannot be limited or excluded under applicable law.

14. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and keep indemnified The Desi Dictionary Ltd against any losses, claims, damages, or expenses arising out of your breach of these Terms, misuse of the App, or infringement of any third-party rights through your use of the App.

15. Force majeure

We will not be responsible for any failure or delay in performing our obligations where such failure or delay results from events outside our reasonable control, including acts of God, internet failures, cloud provider outages, strikes, pandemics, or governmental action.

16. Termination and changes to the App

We may suspend or terminate your access to the App at any time if we reasonably believe you have violated these Terms or are using the App in a way that could cause harm or legal liability. We may also modify, suspend, or discontinue the App at any time. Where possible, we will give reasonable notice of significant changes.

17. Governing law and jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising from these Terms or your use of the App will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

18. Changes to these Terms & Conditions

We may update these Terms and Conditions from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Effective date" at the top of this page. If changes are material, we will notify you within the App or by email. Your continued use of the App after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
