App Privacy Policy

Privacy Policy

Desi Dictionary
Effective date: 20 April 2026

At The Desi Dictionary Ltd, we care about your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and share information when you use the Desi Dictionary mobile application (the "App"). We aim to collect only what we need to run and improve the App.

1. Who we are

App name: Desi Dictionary
Legal entity: The Desi Dictionary Ltd
Registered company number: 16297958
Registered address: London, United Kingdom
Contact: hello@thedesidictionary.com

2. Who this App is for

The App is for users aged 13 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13. If you believe we have done so, contact us at hello@thedesidictionary.com and we will delete it promptly.

3. Information we collect

When you use the App, we may collect:

  • Account and identity information — your name and email address if you register with email, or your Apple ID or Google account details if you use social sign-in. Your password is stored securely and encrypted via Supabase; we never have access to your plain-text password.
  • Profile photo — you may optionally upload a photo from your gallery or take one using your camera. This is stored securely and only visible to you within the App.
  • Onboarding information — your age range (from 13 upwards) and reason for learning, collected to help us understand how the App is being used.
  • Learning data — your language preferences, lessons completed, vocabulary learned, streak data, and subscription tier.
  • Morni usage data — when you use Morni, your input is sent securely to our backend and then to Google's Gemini API to generate a reply. Your conversations are not stored on our servers; they are kept locally on your device (capped at 80 messages per thread) for continuity. Our backend records only daily usage metrics — message counts, aggregated input character volume, and last language used — to manage fair use and subscription limits. No conversation text or audio is retained on our servers.
  • Voice input — if you choose to speak to Morni, your device microphone captures your voice to generate a response. Audio is not stored on our servers or on your device beyond the immediate interaction.
  • Subscription and entitlement information — your subscription status, product identifiers, and entitlement state as provided by Apple or Google and managed through RevenueCat.
  • Usage and device information — basic, anonymised information about how you use the App, collected via Supabase to help us keep the App running smoothly.
  • Support communications — if you contact us, we may collect your email address and the contents of your message.

We do not collect your precise location or contacts. Camera access is used only if you choose to upload a profile photo. Microphone access is used only if you choose to speak to Morni.

4. How we use your information

We use your information to:

  • Create and manage your account and authenticate you via email, Apple, or Google
  • Deliver and personalise your language learning experience
  • Manage your subscription status and feature entitlements via RevenueCat
  • Run Morni by sending your input to our backend, which calls Google Gemini to generate a reply
  • Deliver text-to-speech audio via Google Cloud TTS, or your device's built-in speech engine if cloud TTS is unavailable
  • Send transactional communications your account depends on
  • Send marketing emails and newsletters where you have opted in
  • Send practice reminders and re-engagement notifications (manageable via your device settings)
  • Understand how the App is used and improve it
  • Enforce fair use and subscription limits on Morni
  • Meet our legal obligations

5. Third-party services and processors

We work with a small number of trusted third-party providers to run the App. Each is contractually bound to handle your data securely and only as we instruct.

6. Data retention and account deletion

We keep your data for as long as your account is active and for a reasonable period afterwards for backup, security, and legal purposes. You can delete your account at any time from within the App. When you do, we delete your profile, learning data, and account credentials from our systems within 30 days, except where we are required to retain records by law.

Your Morni conversation history is stored locally on your device and will be cleared when you delete the App or clear its data. Our backend retains only daily usage counts, which are also deleted when your account is removed.

Important: Deleting your account does not cancel your App Store or Google Play subscription. If you have an active subscription, you must cancel it through your Apple or Google account settings, otherwise you may continue to be charged.

7. No advertising or cross-app tracking

We do not show third-party ads in the App. We do not use the App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework or the IDFA to track you across other apps or websites. We do not sell your data to anyone.

8. Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), Supabase Row Level Security (RLS) policies, server-side API key management, and rate limiting on AI and audio endpoints. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. In the event of a data breach that poses a risk to your rights, we will notify you and the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) as required by UK GDPR.

9. Your rights and choices

Depending on where you are based, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict the use of your personal data, or to receive it in a portable format. You can exercise some of these rights directly in the App. For any other requests, contact us at hello@thedesidictionary.com and we will respond within 30 days. If you are based in the UK, you also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

10. International data transfers

Our third-party providers may store or process your data outside the UK, including in the United States. Where this happens, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place in line with UK GDPR, such as Standard Contractual Clauses.

11. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Effective date" at the top of this page. If changes are material, we will notify you via the App or by email. Your continued use of the App after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
